You’ve booked your family photo session, picked the perfect location, and then it hits you: what do we wear?
It’s the question I hear most as a family photographer in Fayetteville NC. Parents stress about it, kids complain about it, and honestly, it can derail the whole vibe before we even start. But here’s the truth, getting your family photo outfits right doesn’t have to be complicated.
Let me be clear, I’m not asking your family to show up in matching khakis and white button-downs. That’s not real life, and it’s definitely not the lifestyle family photography approach I use.
What matters is coordination, not uniformity. When your outfits complement each other without being identical, the focus stays on your faces and connection, not on what you’re wearing. The goal is to look like your family, just the best version of it.
Start here because let’s be honest, you’re probably coordinating everyone else anyway. Choose your outfit first, then build around it.
Flowy dresses work beautifully for spring family photos in Fayetteville NC, especially at locations like Cape Fear Botanical Garden where movement photographs well. Solid colors or subtle patterns keep the focus on you. Avoid anything too trendy, it dates your photos fast.
Comfort matters. If you’re tugging at your clothes or wobbling in heels on uneven ground, it shows. Wedges or flats are your friends, especially at outdoor locations around the Sandhills.
Fitted button-downs or henleys in neutral or muted tones are solid choices. Jeans or chinos work, just make sure they fit well. Baggy clothes photograph poorly, and overly tight clothes make everyone uncomfortable.
Skip the graphic tees and logos. They’re distracting and they date your images immediately.
Dress them in something they can move in. Stiff, uncomfortable clothes create stiff, uncomfortable kids, and that’s not what we’re going for.
Layers work well for spring sessions because temperatures shift. A cardigan or light jacket adds texture and gives us options. Let younger kids have some say in what they wear, within reason. A kid who feels good is a kid who photographs well. Check out Tiny Town for some GREAT ideas!
For family photo sessions in the Fayetteville area, especially in spring, think soft and cohesive.
Earthy tones like sage, cream, rust, and denim blue photograph beautifully against our local greenery. Pastels can work but avoid going too matchy or too Easter. Muted versions of spring colors, think dusty rose instead of hot pink, feel more timeless.
Stick to three main colors across your family’s outfits. More than that and it starts looking chaotic.
Neon colors and all black. Neon competes with faces, and all black can feel heavy, especially in bright spring light.
Busy patterns and large logos. They pull focus and rarely age well.
Brand new shoes. Blisters mid-session help no one.
Overly coordinated outfits. If it looks like you all shopped from the same catalog page, pull back.
Where you’re shooting should influence what you wear. Cape Fear Botanical Garden has lush greenery and natural pathways, so flowy fabrics and earthy tones blend beautifully. Local Fayetteville parks with open fields and natural light work well with lighter, softer color palettes.
If we’re shooting in your backyard or a more urban setting, you have a bit more flexibility. The key is making sure your outfits don’t clash with the environment.
What to wear for family photos doesn’t have to be stressful. Coordinate colors, prioritize comfort, and keep it simple. Your family’s personality should shine through, not your clothes.
Spring is a beautiful time for family photo sessions here in the Sandhills, and when you’re dressed in outfits that feel like you, the images reflect that.
