Clients ask about wardrobe more than almost anything else once they’ve booked. It makes sense. You’ve committed to the session. Now you’re staring at your closet trying to guess what’s going to look right in a photo that’s going to represent you for the next few years. Here’s what actually works for a corporate headshot in Fayetteville and the Sandhills.

 

Solid Colors Work Better Than Patterns

 

Busy patterns, tight stripes, and small checks tend to distort on camera. They can shimmer or vibrate in a way that pulls attention away from your face, which is the whole point of the photo. Solid colors in navy, charcoal, deep green, or burgundy photograph clean and hold up next to your coworkers’ photos. This is especially important if this is a team session.

 

Avoid pure white and pure black if you can. White can blow out under studio lighting, and black can lose all its detail and read as a flat shape. A mid-tone works better than either extreme.

 

What to Wear If You’re an Attorney, Physician, or Financial Advisor

 

Conservative industries photograph best in conservative wardrobe. A blazer or suit jacket in a solid color reads as credible without trying too hard. Collared shirts under the jacket are safer than crew necks. This is especially true for men.

 

If you’re deciding between a few options, pick the one you’d wear to present in front of a client or a courtroom. Do not pick the one you’d wear to a company happy hour. This photo is going on your website, your LinkedIn, and possibly a state bar directory or hospital staff page. It needs to hold up in all of those places for years.

 

For Team and Group Headshot Days

 

If your whole staff is getting photographed together, some coordination goes a long way. You don’t need matching outfits. However, you do want everyone in a similar tone range so the final grid of photos looks like one company. Otherwise, it will look like ten different people who happened to show up the same day.

 

A simple ask works well here: everyone wears solid jewel tones or neutrals, no big logos, no busy patterns. Send that guidance out a week before the session so people have time to actually plan instead of grabbing whatever’s clean that morning.

 

Jewelry, Makeup, and Hair

Keep jewelry simple. Small earrings, a plain necklace, or a watch photograph fine. Large, reflective, or dangling pieces can catch the studio lights and pull focus in a way that’s distracting once you see the final image blown up on a website.

 

For makeup, aim for what you’d wear on a normal workday, maybe slightly more defined since studio lighting is brighter than office lighting. Matte finishes photograph better than heavy shine. For hair, come camera-ready the way you’d show up for an important meeting. If you’re getting it done professionally beforehand, book it for earlier that same day so it still looks fresh.

 

Studio vs On-Location: Does It Change What You Wear?

 

Not much. The lighting setup adjusts to your outfit either way, whether we’re shooting in the studio or on-location at your office in Fayetteville, Southern Pines, or Pinehurst. The one thing worth knowing is that on-location sessions sometimes use your office as the backdrop, so if your workspace has a strong color on the walls, it’s worth avoiding an outfit in that same color so you don’t blend into the background.

 

What to Bring as a Backup

Bring one backup outfit if you’re on the fence between two options. It takes thirty seconds to switch and you’ll have images from both to choose from. Bring a lint roller. Skip anything brand new that you haven’t worn yet, since a jacket that doesn’t sit right will show up in every photo from that session.
